Layout .:. Version 12.0

It's genki because I'm genki! *_* A really cool montage from Serial Experiment Lain... took quite a while to put together in Photoshop (you steal, you die). My blogs almost always feature pics of anime/manga men... I think this is only the second layout to feature a woman. ^^;; The quote is from an article on Lain in the October 1998 issue of Animage. This may be my favorite blog layout yet....

Anime CDs for SALE!!! .:. Saturday, April 21, 2001 .:. 08:05 a.m.

Sound: Desert Rose [Sting]

I've finally found time to go through my cds and weed out the duplicates. These SonMays are in used, excellent condition-- no playback problems, etc. For the most part, I'm selling because I've replaced the SonMay release with the original Japanese version. $12 each, buy more 3 or more and they are $10 each (I will also entertain trade offers). Buyer will pay $4.00 for priority mail shipping (combine cds to save on shipping).

Fushigi Yuugi:

GGG-046 OVA II Mini Album #1 Star of Love [8 tracks including sequential story dramas (Hotohori), vocals: Star, Destiny, and Thanks is Becoming Deeper]

GGG-047 OVA II Mini Album #2 Eternal Scat [8 tracks including sequential story dramas (Chiriko), 4 vocals]

GGG-029 Character's Vocal Memories [16 tracks include both image songs for Miaka, Tamahome, Hotohori, Yui, Nuriko, Chichiri, Tasuki, and one each for Chiriko and Mitsukake]

GA-038 Singles Collection [15 tracks, has no direct Japanese counterpart release; contains OP, ED, one each image song for Miaka, Tamahome, Hotohori, Chichiri, Tasuki, Chiriko (different than the one featured on GGG-029 and the only place you can get it short of buying the cd single for Chiriko), and Mitsukake; both image songs for Yui and Nuriko, plus Wakata Itahazu (slow ballad plays during some of the tender Tatara/Suzuno scenes and when Tamahome walks through the city/Satou Akemi concert]

GA-060 Seiryuu Counterattack!! Special [13 tracks, includes some BGM plus vocals for Nakago (2), Soi (2), Suboshi, Amiboshi, Yui, plus an additional image song for Hotohori (plays during Episode 48), and Miaka]

Magic Knight Rayearth

GA-019 Best Collection/Complete Vocal Collection [16 tracks, has a nice mix of image songs and BGM]

GA-018 Original Songbook I [12 tracks, includes the gorgeous instrumental "Cephiro ~FZ~ Theme", image songs from each of the main characters; one of my fave Rayearth cds]

GA-045 Original Songbook II [12 tracks, all image songs from the second season of Rayeath. My favorite Rayearth cd. Contains vocals for Hikaru, Umi, Fuu, Aska, Caldina, Nova, Presia, Primera & Mokona. But the best part-- vocals for the men of Rayearth-- Lantis, Clef, Ferio, and Eagle!!]

GGG-051 WITH RAYEARTH [10 tracks, vocals from the three part Rayearth OVA. Beatles fans will be sure to notice the homage paid, as the titles or lyrics are inspired from famous Beatles songs-- i.e., Mokona's Garden (Octopus' Garden), All You Need is Love, etc.]

Payment through money order or PayPal. If interested, please email laurelgand@home.com. I'm lisiting here before I list them on Ebay. These will be sold on a first come; first serve basis. Thanks!

Be My Cinderella .:. Tuesday, April 17, 2001 .:. 07:45 p.m.

Sound: Piece of Heaven [Weiß Kreuz]

*happy sigh* Today was nice. I was coasting on some creative kudos-- lotsa nice comments on the new blog layout, a request for more Emperor and Maiden, compliments on my Gundam X site, and the relative sucess of the colored version of the Atsuki fanart in Photoshop (damn! cg is hard, but rewarding!)-- and to top it of, today was a good day at work (power failure and all!).

I've been working on my anal retentive manga inventory/ obsessive list. You can see the beginnings of it here. Only the a-f and wish pages are working (I don't have enough listed yet to chop it up into sections).

Dearest, darling Laurelchan?

...

Why... oh, WHY are you listing publishers and ISBNs for every manga? *blink blink*

*cough* To be brief... most of the mail I get regarding my obsessive manga list (and yes... I get a fair amount) are requests for ISBN information. And I trot out the book and type up a nice informative reply. Until the next request. And the next. And the next.

This way, I can save myself some time and messages, yet still help people out. ^_^V If I had the time and energy and spare space, I'd scan covers for each book too. Heh. Someday, when I have nothing better to do with my life (yeah).

Those wondering about the Cinderella title ^^;;;;. If you're not actively involved with say... elementary education, you may not be aware fully of the intense trend towards multiculturalism in education lately. I certainly remember reading growing up with stereotyped texts and racially-biased learning materials (with perhaps, a token African American or handicapped person). BTW, it's "person with disabilities" now in teacher-speak. Ethnic names are making their way into reading materials (which is great, but not so when pushed to the point that children can recognize names like Shodai (Shaar-day) yet not be able to read Sarah... or Sally...).

But I digress-- one of the cooler things to come out of this focus on multiculturalism, IMHO, is the Cinderella phenomenon. There are Cinderella-like traditions in almost every culture (I could really go off on feminism and desirable feminine traits and socially acceptable values right now, but I will spare you) and interest in expanding a multicultural literary tradition has encouraged publishers to seek out these stories (or invent them).

Tonight I'm looking at a catalog which lists over 60 different ethnic and cultural traditions of Cinderella: Abadena: The Phillipine Cinderella, Angkat: The Cambodian Cinderella, Domitila: A Cinderella Tale From the Mexican Tradition, Jouanah: A Hmong Cinderella, The Turkey Girl: A Zuni Cinderella Story, Yen-sehn: A Cinderella Story from China, Baba Yagi and Vasilia the Brave (Russian), The Enchanted Anklet: A Cinderella Story From India, The Rough-Face Girl (Algonquin Indian) Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale, Persian, West African, Egyptian, Caribbean, Cajun, Appalachian, Vietnamese, German, French, Irish, Polish, Iraqi, Korean... and so on....

Each of these stories carries elements of the familiar story, and each is unique to it's particular culture (I particularly like the Rough-Face Girl version). The kids generally adore these, and they are great for a unit on comparative literature.

I feel like I had a point to make, but I've lost it somewhere along the line @_@. Oh, well....

Gravity Dreams .:. Saturday, April 14, 2001 .:. 08:36 a.m.

Sound: Eien [Himuro Kyosuke]

Gerald, congratulations on getting the summer schedule you wanted, and the video editing equipment! That's awesome!

I've been re-reading L.E. Modesitt... again. I swear that man is one of my favorite authors. I really have been disappointed in most of the new novels I've picked up lately... with the sole exception of the Anita Blake books by Hamilton. Garth Nix is supposed to have a sequel out to Sabriel soon; I'm looking forward to it.

L.E. Modesitt is one of those authors who just blows me away... aside from the engaging characters and the tight plots and the truly original way of looking at the world... aside from the smallest, most commonplace details that just suck you in like a black hole... his search for 'truth', the sociological, political, economic, spiritual, militaristic, and economic basis of his worlds.... I can start off reading the story lightly, but no matter what I always end up reading and find myself having some revelation in the middle. Some deep thought that comes out and makes my brain hurt while I'm trying to wrap it around the concept.

For hours afterward, I'll be distracted, still immersed in the hard questions of life and reality that Modesitt raises.

I remember the first time I read Adiamante... I started reading it one morning and completely lost track of time... and missed my Psychology class! I'd never done that before... and I was a little mortified... but I don't regret it for a second. The rest of the world completed STOPPED, until I finished that novel.

Gravity Dreams is no exception... the main character is all too human, with his failings of pride, self-pity, and deception. The role of the individual within the society, the society to the individual... a clash of cultures... overspace... and the unexpected meeting with 'God' that Tyndel is uniquely prepared for. Another thing I like about Modesitt is that his female characters tend to be uncommonly well-portrayed. I won't say that Cerelle is my favorite, but she's perfect within the context of the story.

Don't you understand? No child asks to be born. No member of any society is given that choice. The only choice you have-- the only real choice any of us has-- is whether you will be a productive member of society. Society doesn't owe you anything. Neither do you owe society anything other than your share of the cost of maintaining that society.

If I could pick any author to emulate, it would be Modesitt. I actually have found myself unconciously echoing Modesitt in some areas... his use of sound effects, for eaxmple, and his occasional plunge into present tense (The Magic Engineer is written entirely in first person... first time I read it through it was kind of eerie...) Next would be Lynn Flewelling, who has possibly the best grasp on characterization and the macabre, hand in hand. Followed by Patricia A. McKillup, for her imagery.

Anyway, I'm going to try to get Genki-O! And failing that, I'm going to go find a penguin to stare at until I feel a murderous rage rise inside me. Why does Mearl always get the best lines?

Laurel

Mmmmmmm .:. Saturday, April 14, 2001 .:. 08:17 a.m.

Sound: I Was Born to Fall in Love [Compiler]
Screen: Zechs Merquise [Seimei & Gerald]
Book: Gravity Dreams [L.E. Modesitt]
Box: 577 [1 Unread]

Well, the long blog hiatus is apparently over. Ken's a little upset his layout wasn't put to better use. Maybe I didn't blog for so long because I had a nosebleed whenever I saw him poured into that leather? Naw....

Anyway, here's the new layout. I like it muchly!

I've been out-of-pocket for the past week or two. Not sure exactly why, but I feel out-of-sorts... at times very depressed and cranky, and other times my normal genki self. I suspect I'm just burning out at work.... less than a month left before vacation, and I guess the days are just getting tougher and tougher. I haven't been sleeping well, when I do sleep. And there's a lot of pressure in other areas of my life right now.

Things will get better. I'm just having a hard time getting excited about much of anything right now. (Now that I've said this, watch me be HYPERSUPAGENKI the next time I see you on AIM -.-;;;;). Catching up-- Mearl, I hope you're feeling a better! Hang in there dear. And I agree with Ger-- it's alright not to like JROCK! I have more JPOP than ROCK on my player at any given moment, but I expect that's more because I don't have as many JROCK songs as JPOP (Gerald, please rectify that). But likeing whatever is 'in' or popular certainly doesn't make you a better otaku or person. I like what I like because I like it (damnit) and I don't need to justify myself to any about it.

Jenchan-- I'm so glad you've been having agood couple of days! I'd have loved to have been there with the Maya Angelpu thing. I will just have to sigh and glaot over meeting Avi ^_~ instead. When you get back and things are settled for you, I'd really love to get together and finish the bloody RC fic! We are pathetic ^_~.

WMC-- Wai! Wai! Don't hurt your P.O., the package cameeeee! Thank you so much ^___________^. And... it's odd, but I've been having the strangest subliminals... something about Touch.... XD XD XD.

Uh. There are other people I need to catch up with, but I'm going to stop for a bit.

Damn, I hate listening to myself... I sound so apathetic.
